Ahead of my time? Or a Total Sucker?

Tonight we are taking the kids to a center called Brain Highways in Denver for a screening.  This is a center that focuses on mid-brain development.  It goes back to the learning that kids who crawl for a long time are better readers b/c of that left-right coordinated movement.

Anyway, the premise is that your mid-brain controls a lot of important things like balance and it serves as a filter for information to get through to the cortex to do the "deeper thinking".  If your mid-brain is underdeveloped, you are still working with your primitive reflexes and it leads to things like behavior issues, fixations, balance problems, attention problems, etc.

There are 5 video clips that describe what can happen when different parts of the mid-brain are underdeveloped.  Watching the first 3, I dismissed the whole thing as "normal kid behavior", although Darcy does a LOT of the things mentioned (these were more behavior problems and attention/fidgeting issues).  But then we got to video #4 and it talked about kids who: have oral fixations where they are always chewing on their shirt, hair or sleeve (CHECK!), have "slippery chair syndrome" where they are sitting in a perfectly normal chair and then just fall out (DAILY - CHECK!), run their hand along the wall whenever they can (CHECK!), have no concept of space so they run into things, step on things, etc. (CHECK!), literally forget where their body parts are b/c they feel so disconnected from their body (CHECK we think).  Since those are not just behavior issues, but "Darcy-isms" that we thought were completely unrelated, and it turns out there is a whole video dedicated to just Darcy-type behaviors, and since after all it can't hurt, we are going to this screening to check it out.  The idea being that one reason Darcy has such a hard time is that her brain is trying so hard just to stay upright, that it can't focus on anything "higher order".

So, am I a totally innovative, ahead of my time mom?  Or am I a total sucker?

I dare not hope, but.... hope has crept in... I am officially hopeful...
